About The Next Step In Tech (NSIT):
Tech Education in Kenya and Africa That Changes Lives
My Story:
How I Found Hope Through Tech Education in Kenya and Africa
I am Joseph Mwaluko, the founder of NSIT. I was born and raised in a small village in Makueni County, Kenya. Life was not easy. I lost my mother at age six, and my father was absent.
Thankfully, a foster family stepped in and helped me grow. Therefore, I was one of the beneficiaries of Kenya’s first free Primary Education program started in 2002. This was during the government led by President Mwai Kibaki.
Later, I completed high school and earned a university slot through government sponsorship. I studied at Maseno University.

My Journey from Struggle to Opportunity in Tech Education in Kenya
After graduating, like many other fresh graduates in Kenya, I moved to Nairobi City to seek job opportunities. This is because in our society, there is a notion that jobs are only found in urban areas. Therefore, most graduates move to big towns and cities in Kenya. Thus, it goes without saying I followed the popular way – I was not exceptional. I landed in Nairobi to one of my extended family relative to start job hunting.
However, upon arriving in the city, I could not find a job immediately. So, like many young Kenyans, I was unemployed and frustrated. But I can say God did a miracle for me amidst my struggles. Then, a friend introduced me to online academic and research freelance writing. He trained me for free and shared his online writing accounts with me. Therefore, I begun my new job in less than two weeks. The first account I worked with under him was StudyPool.com.
That first opportunity helped me start earning and gaining professional skills. I learned how to research and write academic papers, data analysis and research reports, presentations, and interact with clients. Eventually, I discovered data analysis and visualization using Microsoft Excel — and I was hooked.
Bridging the Gap: My Transition to Tech Careers
As I handled more projects, I realized I needed programming skills to grow. I started learning Python for Data Science on my own. Then I formalized my skills through a paid Data Science and Machine Learning course. At the same time, I joined the AWS re/Start Program through Ajira Kenya and became a certified AWS Cloud Practitioner.
In 2024, I completed ALX Africa’s AI Career Essentials course. This added to my knowledge base and skills. Finally, I regularly use Sololearn to stay sharp in Python for Data Science and AI. These opportunities showed me that tech education in Kenya can be powerful and it can change lives.
Why I Started NSIT: A Mission Rooted in Experience and Gratitude
The main reason for starting was only one with several goals.
Thus, I created The Next Step In Tech (NSIT) to help others start or transition into tech careers — just like I did in my fields.
The main focus is on Data Science, Cloud Computing, and Artificial Intelligence.
My goal is to guide:
I understand the struggle. That is why I have built a platform focused on free, accessible, and affordable tech education in Kenya and Africa.
Vision

A New Path for Tech Education in Kenya and Africa at Large
I envision NSIT becoming Kenya’s leading platform for inclusive, practical, and community-driven tech education.
I want to train professionals in:
- Data Science and Machine Learning using Python.
- Cloud Computing with AWS.
- AI tools for productivity and innovation.
What Makes NSIT Different?
If you do a bit of research, many online learning courses are expensive. Mine are not. Most of them are free or insanely cheap.
At NSIT, You Get Yourself:
Why Tech Education in Kenya Matters Right Now
The numbers speak clearly:
- 1.2 million youth are unemployed in Kenya (KNBS 2023)
- Only 13% of Kenyan youth have digital skills (UNESCO 2022)
- Across Africa, 100 million youth will enter the workforce by 2030 (World Bank)
We need practical, scalable, and free tech education solutions — and NSIT is part of that solution.
